The Red Tower of Crimmitschau once stood on today's Taubenmarkt. It was canceled on October 5, 1928, despite violent popular protests. In the Middle Ages the Red Tower was used as a prison and archive .

Historical background

Red towers were probably used for justice in the past . "Rout" means something like right in Middle High German. The name cannot be traced back to structural components that have changed several times.

Dimensions

He was 23.85 m high and carried a 3 m high and 150 kg weather vane . It was only added to the tower in 1904 together with the new tower dome. The square tower has never changed its compact shape. The circumference of the tower was 21.60 m. Depending on the height of the storey, it had a wall thickness between 1.75 m below and 1.45 m above.

history

It used to be assumed that the tower was built between 1000 and 1100. The age of the structure could be determined when it was demolished. In the middle of the tower, the shards of 2 pots, a piece of iron and various animal bones were found in a cave-shaped recess. From the location and condition it emerged that the pots had already been shattered. These so-called building sacrifices , like today's foundation stones, were inserted under new buildings as lucky charms. The discovery made it clear that the tower must have been built between 1350 and 1400.

Before the tower received the red roof, a crenellated wreath formed the end. Older pictures show the tower with a pointed roof. The associated upper or Zwick gate was demolished in 1824. On the tower was a so-called bed bell, which was rung in the morning and evening. According to historical records, this procedure was ordered in 1682.
