The Red Tower is a gate tower of the former Pulsnitz city gate of the city of Kamenz that has been preserved to this day . It stands on the southern edge of the historic old town.
history
The city wall of Kamenz was first mentioned in a document in 1348. In addition to the Bautzen and Königsbrück city gates, it also owned the Pulsnitz gate, the remainder of which the Red Tower has been preserved to this day. The tower owes its name to the red granite from which it was built. In the 15th and 16th centuries, the tower was inhabited by a tower guard and also served as a prison for younger civil prisoners. In the course of the razing of the Kamenz city wall around 1835, the Pulsnitz Gate was also demolished and the Red Gate Tower is one of the few remnants of the former city fortifications.
