Rowallan Castle

Rowallan Castle is a manor house in the Scottish council area of East Ayrshire . It is located about 1.5 km north of the town of Kilmarnock on the banks of Carmel Water. In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

The history of Rowallan Castle is extensively illuminated archaeologically. It can be traced back to at least the middle of the 12th century. At that time, a massive stone building was erected on this site, which was first mentioned in 1263. Underneath this structure, however, there are wooden pillars in the ground, which indicate a previous building. In the late 14th century, a tower house was built on the remains of the stone structure . This is a probably three-story quarry stone building with a square floor plan. This was redesigned and expanded in the early 16th century, with the foundation being retained up to the first floor. From the late 17th to the middle of the 18th century, Rowallan Castle was only used temporarily and fell into disrepair. As a result, various vaults collapsed, also as a result of stone theft. The manor house has since been restored.
