The Royal Canal Scherzer Bridge is a wrought iron bridge in Dublin , Ireland . The Scherzer roller flap bridge is entered in the list of monuments under number 912. It's located on North Wall Quay on Guild Street. The bridge was built in 1912 and spans the Royal Canal at the point where it meets the Liffey .

The bridge was built to give water traffic access to the Royal Canal and Spencer Docks, but also to keep seawater out of the docks. Today it is no longer used for this purpose as its diesel engines have been removed. The bridge could stop traffic and let a ship through in four and a half minutes. Today it serves as a memorial to Docklands' industrial past.

This Scherzer bridge was constructed according to a principle that goes back to a patent by William Scherzer (Chicago) and which has spread very quickly worldwide. The system is the most widely used for movable bridges due to the speed and need for minimal energy input to operate.
