Scheme of a Runddysse seen from above

The excavated Runddysse from Galgebjerg (also called Galgebjærg or Birkebjerg) is located about east of Dalby on the Hindsholm peninsula on the Danish island of Funen .

The trapezoidal, north-south-oriented chamber of the extended dolmen in the round dysse at the top of the Galgebjerg consists of seven bearing stones and a large, flat capstone. One end stone lies in the north, two lateral bearing stones in the west, of which the southern one is tilted inward, and three in the east, of which the middle leans inward. The access page is open or not preserved.

The chamber, located in the remains of a large hill, is about 2.7 meters long, 1.8 meters wide in the north and 1.2 meters high at the entrance. Numerous large stones can be seen on both sides of the hill, partly curbs and partly added stones.

Individual evidence

  1. Runddolmen (Danish: Runddysse) is the name commonly used in Denmark for dolmens that are located in a round hill. In contrast, dolmens lying in a rectangular mound bed are called long dolmens
