- January 1st - The founding declaration of the United Nations is signed by 26 states in Washington, DC
- January 20 - At the Wannsee Conference chaired by SS-Obergruppenführer Reinhard Heydrich, the “ final solution to the Jewish question ” is planned in detail.
- 28-29 March: Lübeck is the first major German city to be attacked by the Royal Air Force with an area bomb.
- April 26th - By resolution of the Greater German Reichstag , Adolf Hitler becomes Supreme Court Lord - without being bound by existing legal provisions.
- August 23 - A massive German air raid on Stalingrad kills thousands of civilians. The city is almost completely destroyed.

- January 1st - All radio stations in the Netherlands are placed under the control of the German occupying forces.
- January 24 - The radio drama series Abie's Irish Rose premieres on NBC .
- January 29 - Desert Island Discs , recorded two days earlier, is first broadcast as part of the BBC's Forces Program and becomes one of the BBC's longest-running series of talks in subsequent years.
- March 4th - Junior Miss series with Shirley Temple begins on CBS .
- May 26 - The United States Department of War establishes the Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS), the forerunner of the AFN .

- April 1 - Annie Nightingale , British radio and television presenter, is born in West London.
- April 21 - Manfred Jochum , Austrian radio director and science journalist was born in Vienna († 2009).
- April 27 - Brigitte Xander , Austrian radio and television presenter, was born Brigitte Ksander in Bruck an der Mur . From the 1970s on, she became known primarily as the presenter of the Ö3 alarm clock and the one- hundred thousand schilling quiz on the radio and as a juror for Dalli Dalli and as the presenter of the ORF cookery program with celebrities asking for dinner on television († 2008).
- May 16 - Walter Schiejok , Austrian television presenter ( Wir , Arguments , Schiejok daily, talk show, 1995–1997, as well as conflicts - citizens fight for their rights , 1992–2001).
