- In the course of the year, a number of Central and Eastern European countries set the course for communist takeover of power, for example King Michael I abdicated in Romania and a new constitution was passed in Bulgaria . In Czechoslovakia , the CP comes to power legally through elections.
- The main work of Theodor W. Adornos and Max Horkheimer , the collection of essays Dialectic of the Enlightenment, is published for the first time in German by Querido Verlag in Amsterdam . One of the central problems dealt with in it besides the question of why the investigation into anti-Semitism , National Socialism and the Holocaust failed, a fundamental criticism of the "culture industry".
- January 4th - The first issue of the news magazine Der Spiegel appears.
- March 12 - Proclamation of the Truman Doctrine and final breakup of the anti-Hitler coalition .
- July 16 - Radio Corporation of America (RCA) demonstrates the world's first fully electronic color television camera to the Federal Communications Commission .
- August 14th - Foundation of Pakistan .
- August 15th - India becomes independent.
- December 23rd - The first functional bipolar transistor developed by Walter H. Brattain and William B. Shockley at Bell Laboratories is presented in an internal presentation. In the years that followed, the much smaller transistors replaced the previously used electron tubes and thus created one of the most important foundations for the rapid development of microelectronics in the second half of the 20th century.

- Feb. 13 - The NWDR sends by Wolfgang Borchert wrote radio plays outside the door .
- February 17th - The Voice of America begins broadcasting its program via shortwave to the Soviet Union .
- April 9th - The BBC broadcasts its How Does Your Garden Grow? which was later renamed Gardeners' Question Time .
- August 14th - Radio Pakistan begins broadcasting with three medium-wave stations in Lahore , Dhaka (East Pakistan) and Peshawar .
- August 31 - The first regular radio station goes into operation in Trinidad and Tobago .
- September 11th - Radio China International opens an English-language overseas service.
- October 27th - The quiz show You Bet Your Life with Groucho Marx starts on the radio.
- November 2 - Following the British model, the NWDR begins broadcasting a night program with high-quality programs.

- January 21 - KTLA in Los Angeles begins broadcasting as the first commercial television station in the western United States.
- May - Actors Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz found the television production company Desilu Productions in Los Angeles . In the following decades, TV series such as I Love Lucy and Raumschiff Enterprise emerged in their studios .
- October 5 - The US broadcasts the first televised address by an American president, which is broadcast simultaneously on the radio.
- November 6 - NBC will broadcast the first edition of Meet the Press , the world's longest-running non-stop television series.

- April 12 - David Letterman , American late-night show host, is born in Indianapolis .
- April 23rd - Reinhard Schwabenitzky , Austrian director is born in Rauris , Salzburg .
- June 21 - Michael Gross , American actor ( Steven Keaton in family ties , 1982–1989) was born in Chicago .
- August 5th - Konrad Heidkamp , German journalist, music and literary critic and book author and member of the audio book jury of the Hessischer Rundfunk , was born in Munich († 2009).
- August 11th - Diether Krebs , German actor ( one heart and one soul ) was born in Essen († 2000).
- December 6th - Herbert Kloiber , Austrian film rights dealer and media entrepreneur (including owner of ATV ) is born in Vienna .
Died
- May 11th - Richard Ohnsorg , German theater director, actor and radio play speaker, dies at the age of 71 in his native Hamburg . He was the founder and long-time director of the Ohnsorg Theater and worked extensively as a speaker and director at NORAG .
