- RCA Victor , a General Electric subsidiary, begins selling color television sets.
- The University of Film and Television opens in Potsdam .
- February 15 - In Austria, broadcasting sovereignty is transferred to the Austrian federal government by the four occupying powers, the USA, the Soviet Union, Great Britain and France. Alfons Übelhör is appointed as the first public administrator of Austrian radio .
- July 30th - The British Parliament approves the introduction of commercial television .
- October 5 - In Austria, the Constitutional Court decides that broadcasting falls under the jurisdiction of the federal government, thus laying one of the foundations for the later ORF monopoly.
- October 18 - The US unveils the first commercial transistor radio, the Regency TR-1 .

- January 1st - The Hessischer Rundfunk starts broadcasting commercials.
- February 1st - With the words "Mes amis, au secours!" The French priest and founder of the Emmaus charity , Abbé Pierre, appeals via Radio Luxembourg to his compatriots to donate for homeless people who are at risk of cold death during the exceptionally harsh winter of 1953/54. The "Appeal of Abbé Pierre" triggers an unprecedented wave of solidarity, the French press speaks of an "insurrection of mercy".
- March 30 - NBC Radio will air the final episode of the Rocky Fortune crime series starring Frank Sinatra .
- June 1st - The Sender Free Berlin goes into operation.
- July 4th - Herbert Zimmermann reports in a radio report that has become famous about the final of the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland, called the “ Miracle of Bern ” , in which Germany beat Hungary as the favorite.

- September 26 - Hollywood actor Ronald Reagan , who later became President of the United States, first hosts the General Electric Theater , a commercial for numerous General Electric products . The series makes Reagan wealthy and can increase his popularity even further. His increasing turn to political conservatism during this period led to the breakdown with his employer and the end of the show in 1962, when Reagan identified the TVA as one of the problems of "big government".
- October 15 - ABC airs the first episode of The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin .
- October 27th - The first episode of The Wonderful World of Disney airs on ABC . The show, initially presented by Walt Disney , shows various cartoons. The program will remain on various channels with changing titles and presenters until 2008.
