- The first edition of the Neue Kronen Zeitung published by Hans Dichand appears in Vienna . The tabloid benefited from the decline of the party press like the Arbeiter-Zeitung , quickly becoming Austria's daily newspaper with the highest circulation and by the early 1970s at the latest (politically) most influential.
- The American journalist John Howard Griffin travels through the southern United States disguised as an African American and summarizes his experiences in the groundbreaking report Black Like Me .
- Foundation of Northern Vision by the public service broadcasters in Denmark ( Danmarks Radio ), Sweden ( Sveriges Television ), Norway ( NRK ) and Finland ( Yleisradio ).
- February 3 - A plane crash over a cornfield in Iowa kills the pilot and musicians on board Buddy Holly , Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper . Years later, the misfortune is dealt with by Don McLean's song American Pie in the phrase The Day The Music Died .
- July 10th - The previous Bavaria Film is re-established as Bavaria Atelier GmbH . The new majority shareholders are SDR and WDR .
- November 17th - Radio Luxemburg holds the German Schlager Festival in Wiesbaden for the first time .

- March - The People's Republic of China broadcasts a regular radio program for the first time in occupied Tibet .
- May 20 - The GDR radio organizes the international broadcaster Radio Berlin International as an independent radio chain. His programs can be heard in German , English , French , Danish and Arabic .
- July 5th - Start of the 3rd season of the radio play series produced by NDR Hamburg under the direction of SO Wagner , Gestatten, my name is Cox by Rolf and Alexandra Becker , with Erwin Linder in the title role.
- October 2 - The WDR in Cologne begins broadcasting the 8-part radio play Paul Temple and the Spencer case by Francis Durbridge with René Deltgen , Annemarie Cordes and Kurt Lieckin as the leading roles (director: Eduard Hermann ).
- November 26th - The BR in Munich starts broadcasting the 8-part radio play Paul Temple and the Conrad case by Francis Durbridge with Karl John and Rosemarie Fendel in the leading roles (directed by Willy Purucker ).

- The Bayerische Rundfunk starts with the series Luis Trenker told in the Luis Trenker plain and recites without further aids and cuts on camera stories from his life. The series ensures a comeback for the South Tyrolean author and filmmaker and makes him familiar to a younger audience. The series even achieved cult status through reruns on BR-alpha in the 1990s and 2000s .
- January 1st - The ORF broadcasts television advertising for the first time .
- January 9th - One day after Charles de Gaulle took over the first presidency of the Fifth Republic , the reportage magazine Cinq colonnes à la une can be seen for the first time on French television (RTF) . The first issue reports on Brigitte Bardot , among other things , but also collects opinions from German, French and Italian workers about the European internal market . However, the series gains importance beyond the topicality of the day because it repeatedly deals with the Algerian war in critical reports about the FLN , the reality of the war in Algeria and the pied noir .

- April 24 - Paula Yates , British television presenter, was born in Colwyn Bay , Wales († 2000).
- August 20 - Sabine Rossbach , German journalist and radio presenter, director of the NDR Landesfunkhaus Hamburg (2010-) was born in Hachenburg ( Rhineland-Palatinate ).
Died
- January 9th - Hans Bredow , high-frequency technician and German radio pioneer dies at the age of 79 in Wiesbaden . Together with Alexander Meißner he started the first experiments with tube transmitters in 1917 .
- October 18 - Helmuth Gmelin , German theater founder ( Theater im Zimmer ), actor, director and radio drama speaker dies at the age of 68 in Hamburg .
