General

  • The two British musicians Billy Drummomd and Jimmy Cauty ( The KLF ) release The Manual. (How To Have a Number One the Easy Way) . In it, they describe how to make it into the charts by means of sampling and skillful handling of the press - largely without artistic talent - and thus expose the mechanisms of the music business in a satirical manner. In the same year, the Austrian Edelweiß project called Bring Me Edelweiss actually achieved a number 1 success using an ABBA sample and the (satirical) tips described in The Manual .
  • A major fire in the Hamburg studio destroys a large part of the props and backdrops of the German version of Sesame Street . The concept of the series must then be completely revised.
  • May - The Moving Picture Experts Group meets for its first meeting in Ottawa . The international commission of experts deals with the standardization of audio and video compression processes . Towards the end of the 1990s, with the spread of personal computers, their acronym MPEG for video files became popular.

  • August 28 - With Pronto Salvatore , RTLplus showed a daily break filler until 1991 because the station did not have enough advertisers at the time.
