- January 1st - Radio Kultur is reoriented as a classical and cultural station of the SFB .
- March 9th - The FunkForum is founded in Timisoara , an association of German-speaking radio editors from Romania , Hungary , Serbia and Croatia .
- April 30th - Bremen Eins goes on air at 1 p.m. as the successor to the Hansawelle and Radio Bremen Melodie .
- May 11th - At the awarding of the Salzburg bull , the FM4 series Projekt X is awarded.
- June 28th - KroneHit starts broadcasting .
- September 3 - Start of the popular radio station Radio Goldstar, which can be received in Germany, Austria and Switzerland . (Already discontinued in 2002 for economic reasons.)

- September 2 - US launch of the Scrubs hospital series on NBC .
- September 11 - At 8:46 a.m. local time (12:46:40 UTC ), American Airlines Flight 11 flies into the North Tower of the World Trade Center . The New York TV station WNYW reported the accident live two minutes later. Shortly afterwards, at 8:49 a.m., CNN followed suit . The ARD joins with an extra of the day , the ORF reports live from 3:05 p.m. CET .
- September 18 - Sex and the City is broadcast on German-speaking television for the first time on ProSieben .
- September 24th - ProSieben begins the German-language premiere of the comedy series Malcolm in the middle .
- September 29th - The Tigerenten Club celebrates its 300th broadcast live from Circus Roncalli in Hanover .
- December 5 - On ARTE has the docudrama The Manns - Novel of a Century of Heinrich Breloer premiere.
- December 14 - In the ZDF is the last episode of the Literary Quartet to see.

- January 30th - Hartmut Reck , German actor and television actor ( Tatort , Die Männer vom K3 ) dies in Nienburg / Weser at the age of 68.
- April 21 - Christian Günther , German radio presenter ( Hitline International , Please, Mr. DJ ) dies at the age of 63 in Bremen . Günther spoke the introductory monologue for the German dubbed version of the television series Knight Rider .
- May 11 - Douglas Adams , British science fiction writer, dies at the age of 49 in Santa Barbara, California . Adams became famous for his series of novels The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy , which was adapted as a radio play and television series by the BBC .
- July 26th - Peter von Zahn , German radio and television journalist, dies in Hamburg at the age of 88.
- June 12th - Robert Hochner , Austrian television journalist and Zeit im Bild -Anchorman, dies at the age of 55 in Vienna .
- August 3rd - Hans Holt , Austrian theater, film and television actor ( Ambassador Hans Hollmann in Die liebe Familie , Uncle Rudolf in I will marry a family , Franz in Der Leihopa ) dies at the age of 91 in Baden near Vienna .
- August 10 - Werner Pirchner , Austrian composer, dies at the age of 61 in Innsbruck . In 1994 Pirchner created a completely new sound design for the cultural broadcaster Ö1 .
- September 11 - Barbara Olson , American television commentator, dies at the age of 48 as a victim of the hijacked American Airlines Flight 77 that crashes on the Pentagon .
- September 20 - Karl-Eduard von Schnitzler , German radio commentator ( The Black Canal ) dies at the age of 83 in Zeuthen .
- December 11th - Herbert Lichtenfeld , Austrian television author ( Tatort , Die Schwarzwaldklinik ) dies at the age of 74 in Hamburg .
- December 25th - Werner Achmann , German production designer and film set designer (among others for the television series Raumpatrouille ) dies at the age of 72 (* 1929).
