- May - The Abu Ghuraib torture scandal becomes known through the publication of photos on the Internet . For the first time since the declaration of the war on terror , the American and British governments have to grapple with the allegation of systematic torture of prisoners and apologize publicly for this.
- July - Sony introduces the Hi-MD , a further development of the MiniDisc . The market launch of the data carriers, which can store up to 1 gigabyte, is due to the massive pressure that has arisen from the general distribution of music files in MP3 format. However, the copy protection restrictions do not cease completely until the third (and last) generation launched in 2006. - March 31 - In the US, WLIB ( New York ), WNTD ( Chicago ), KBLA ( Los Angeles ), KCCA ( San Bernardino ), KPOJ ( West Palm Beach , Florida ) and WMNN ( Minnesota ) join Air America Radio Network together. The broadcaster, which has around 1.5 million listeners, specializes primarily in politically controversial discussions.
- June 7th - The Austrian writer Elfriede Jelinek is awarded the War Blind Radio Play Prize for her radio play Jackie, produced by BR .
- October 1st - Austria celebrates eighty years of radio.
- December 8th - KroneHit is the first private radio operator in Austria to be granted a nationwide license.
