May - The Abu Ghuraib torture scandal becomes known through the publication of photos on the Internet . For the first time since the declaration of the war on terror , the American and British governments have to grapple with the allegation of systematic torture of prisoners and apologize publicly for this.
July - Sony introduces the Hi-MD , a further development of the MiniDisc . The market launch of the data carriers, which can store up to 1 gigabyte, is due to the massive pressure that has arisen from the general distribution of music files in MP3 format. However, the copy protection restrictions do not cease completely until the third (and last) generation launched in 2006. This allows files to be exchanged between the PC and the mini disc recorder in both directions.

March 21 - Radio AGORA starts broadcasting , a Slovenian-language radio program for Carinthia .

March 31 - In the US, WLIB ( New York ), WNTD ( Chicago ), KBLA ( Los Angeles ), KCCA ( San Bernardino ), KPOJ ( West Palm Beach , Florida ) and WMNN ( Minnesota ) join Air America Radio Network together. The broadcaster, which has around 1.5 million listeners, specializes primarily in politically controversial discussions.
June 7th - The Austrian writer Elfriede Jelinek is awarded the War Blind Radio Play Prize for her radio play Jackie, produced by BR .

October 1st - Austria celebrates eighty years of radio.

December 8th - KroneHit is the first private radio operator in Austria to be granted a nationwide license.

Jan. 10 - On RTL is the first German season of I'm a Celebrity - Get Me Out of Here! broadcast.

January 25 - The 61st Golden Globe Awards are presented in Los Angeles . The TV series 24 and The Office are awarded as best drama and best comedy series in the TV series category.

February 24th - The German-language first broadcast of the comedy series Gilmore Girls begins on ORF 1 .

March 4th - The first episode of the tuning show Pimp My Ride can be seen on MTV .

March 24th - ProSieben begins the German-language premiere of the documentary soap The Simple Life in which Paris Hilton and her friend Nicole Richie have to fight their way through life for a month without luxury, money and credit cards.

April 19 - The Golden Rose of Montreux honors the clay animation series Creature Comforts and the German actress Felicitas Woll for her performance as leading actress in the ARD series Berlin, Berlin .

May 11th - VOX begins the German-language premiere of the HBO series Six Feet Under .

May 19 - The ORF has to cede the rights to the Bundesliga to the pay TV channel Premiere .

June 21st - In the greater Vienna area , Puls TV commences official operations as the second private broadcaster to be received terrestrially in Austria .

August 2nd - The first episode of Sarah Kuttner - The Show is broadcast on MTV . The program, moderated by Sarah Kuttner in the style of a late night show , can be seen until August 2006 after switching to VIVA .

October 2nd - The 150th TV show Wetten, dass ..? is broadcast live from Berlin.

Oct. 11 - On ProSieben has the comedy series Stromberg premiere.

October 14th - KI.KA broadcasts the animated series Lilli the witch for the first time .

December 15 - The Austrian broadcaster ATV begins the German-language premiere of Nip / Tuck - beauty has its price .

May 14th - Günter Gaus , German television journalist, diplomat and politician dies at the age of 74 in Hamburg-Altona . Gaus was best known for his long-standing series of interviews on the person and on the record .

June 16 - Ursula Lillig , German actress and radio play speaker , who was best known for her role as Helga Legrelle in the 7-part television series Raumpatrouille , dies at the age of 65 in Frankfurt am Main .

July 21 - Baldur Seifert , German radio presenter ( Sunday concert , SWR ) dies at the age of 68.
