2004: The Dutch director and satirist Theo van Gogh is murdered

General

  • May - The Abu Ghuraib torture scandal becomes known through the publication of photos on the Internet . For the first time since the declaration of the war on terror , the American and British governments have to grapple with the allegation of systematic torture of prisoners and apologize publicly for this.
  • July - Sony introduces the Hi-MD , a further development of the MiniDisc . The market launch of the data carriers, which can store up to 1  gigabyte, is due to the massive pressure that has arisen from the general distribution of music files in MP3 format. However, the copy protection restrictions do not cease completely until the third (and last) generation launched in 2006. This allows files to be exchanged between the PC and the mini disc recorder in both directions.
