  • April 2 - Pope John Paul II (Karol Wojtyła) dies at the age of 84 after almost 27 years of pontificate . His funeral becomes an international media event.
  • December 31st - The CBS Corporation founds the media group Viacom , which emerged from the "old Viacom". The new company, based in New York, is responsible, among other things, for MTV with all regional branches overseas.

Radio

  • January 16 - The Austrian radio station FM4 celebrates its tenth birthday.
  • March 29th - Stefan Weigl is awarded the War Blind Radio Play Prize for the radio play Stripped - A Life in Account Statements produced by WDR .
  • October 1st: The operation of hr-klassik was stopped after just seven years for cost reasons. The frequencies of the program were distributed to the other waves of the Hessischer Rundfunk (mainly hr2).
  • October 14th - The first BBC proclaimed John Peel Day is celebrated worldwide .
  • December 16 - In the United States, the last Howard Stern Show is broadcast on analog radio frequencies.
