description

When the Middleton round hut was built and when it was used has not yet been investigated in detail. Round huts of this type were in use in Scotland during the 2nd millennium BC. Commonly used in BC, so depending on the construction date still fall into the Bronze Age or the Early Iron Age .

The building is located on a gentle slope. The remains of the outer wall have a diameter of six meters and a thickness of two meters. They are still preserved today up to a height of 30 cm, with the best degree of preservation being in the north and west of the arc. The hut was enclosed by an oval fortification wall that was a maximum of 29 m long and 24 m wide. Both masonry can be clearly seen as bands of quarry stone in the landscape. An entrance opening is not visible. The drainage ditch of a field runs through the remains of the round hut, which is of later date. In the northeast within the enclosure there is a possibly leveled area measuring 16 m × 10 m, which could once have formed an outer courtyard.
