Runeberg tartlets

The Runeberg tart (Finnish: Runebergintorttu ; Swedish: Runebergstårta ) is a small cake with almonds from Finland .

The writer Johan Ludvig Runeberg is said to have eaten these tarts every day during his stay in Porvoo . In Finland, on February 5th, the birthday of Johan Ludvig Runeberg, Runeberg Day ( Runebergin päivä ) is celebrated. For weeks before that day, the Runeberg tartlets are available all over Finland and are eaten in memory of the writer. In Porvoo, Runeberg tarts can be bought in every bakery all year round.

According to legend, the wife of Johan Ludvig Runeberg, Frederika Runeberg, invented the cake. For production, finely chopped almonds , flour, breadcrumbs from gingerbread and sourdough bread , eggs and other ingredients are mixed and baked. The finished tartlets are garnished with icing and raspberry jam.
