Russell sign on the back of the hand

The Russell sign , named after the British psychiatrist Gerald Russell , describes skin changes on the back of the hand after repeated self-induced vomiting over long periods of time. The skin lesions are caused by rubbing the knuckles against the incisors while the gag reflex in the back of the throat is triggered with the fingers.
