Russell S. Taft (born January 28, 1835 in Williston , Vermont , † March 22, 1902 in Burlington , Vermont) was an American politician and lawyer , who was Lieutenant Governor of Vermont from 1872 to 1874 . He was also Chief Justice on the Vermont Supreme Court .

Life

Russell Smith Taft was born in Williston, Vermont. He attended school in Williston and Burlington. He studied law with George F. Edmunds and was admitted to the bar in 1856. He was the first president of the Vermont Life Insurance Company and later its vice president.

As a member of the Vermont sister party of the Republican Party , he was from 1861 to 1864 a member of the Board of Selectmen , the executive body of the government of the cities of New England. After Burlington became a city, Taft was a senior man there from 1865 to 1869.

From 1862 to 1865, Taft was District Attorney in Chittenden County and from 1863 to 1880 in charge of the county's estate registry. Taft served in the Vermont Senate from 1865 to 1866 and was the Municipal Attorney of Burlington from 1871 to 1872.

Taft ran successfully for the Republican Party in 1872 for the office of lieutenant governor , which he held until 1874. In 1874 he was the defeated Republican Party's candidate for governor . Governor was Asahel Peck selected. Taft was an MP for Burlington in the Vermont House of Representatives in 1880.

In 1880 he was elected Associate Justice of the Vermont Supreme Court by the Vermont General Assembly. He held this office until 1899. Then he was appointed Chief Justice. He succeeded Jonathan Ross in office, who became a Senator in the United States Senate .

Taft held the office of Chief Justice until his death. He died in Burlington, Vermont on March 22, 1902. His grave is in Williston's Morse Cemetery.

Chief Justice Taft received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Vermont , a Master of Arts degree in 1877, and a Doctor of Laws degree in 1899.
