The Russians Monument

The Russian monument is a memorial stone in Hinter- Schellenberg in Liechtenstein , which is located near the “Wirtschaft zum Löwen” tavern. It recalls the escape of the 1st Russian National Army, which collaborated with the Wehrmacht during the Second World War , across the then imperial border to Liechtenstein in order to apply for asylum there.

The monument is a pedestal with a round plaque attached. The following inscription can be read on the base:

ESTABLISHED BY THE COMMUNITY OF SCHELLENBERG ON MAY 3, 1980 IN THE PRESENCE OF GENERAL MAYOR A. HOLMSTON-SMYSLOWSKY

The following inscription is on the plaque:

HERE IN HINTERSCHELLENBERG, IN THE NIGHT OF MAY 2 TO 3 MAY 1945, THE ASYLUM-SEEKING REMAINS OF THE “1. RUSSIAN NATIONAL ARMY OF THE GERMAN ARMY »UNDER THEIR MAJOR GENERAL A. HOLMSTON SMYSLOWSKY - ABOUT 500 PEOPLE - FULLY EQUIPPED THE GREAT GERMAN EMPIRE TO LIECHTENSTEIN. IN THE “ECONOMY TO LION” THE FIRST NEGOTIATIONS TAKE PLACE WHICH LEADED TO THE GRANT OF ASYLUM BY THE PRINCIPALITY OF LIECHTENSTEIN. LIECHTENSTEIN IS THE ONLY STATE RESPECTING ITS SOVIET EXTRIBUTION REQUIREMENTS AFTER TWO AND A HALF YEARS THE RUSSIANS WERE ALLOWED TO TRAVEL TO A COUNTRY OF YOUR CHOICE
