Russian Winter ( Russian Русская зима , Russkaja Sima ) is a picture by Nikifor Krylov from 1827. It was made in a village on the banks of the Tosna near Saint Petersburg . Today the painting belongs to the collection of the Russian Museum .

A local patron had a house built for Krylov in exchange for the picture. Krylov painted the landscape that he could see from the window of his studio during the months he spent there. He lived on the outskirts of the village and the inhabitants were busy with their everyday tasks: in the foreground a woman with a yoke is carrying buckets of water, a man is leading a horse by the bridle, two women have stopped and are talking. In the distance there is a forest, then a huge endless plain. Snow is everywhere, the trees are bare. The sun is low and the shadows are long. The author managed to masterfully capture the atmosphere of the Russian winter. Such a winter landscape in its simplicity, this sincerity is rare in Russian painting of the first half of the 19th century. The painting was first presented at an exhibition at the Academy of Arts (Академия художеств), where it was positively received by contemporaries. “Krylov admirably captured the lighting given to the landscape by the white of the snow. He recorded the different colors of the cloudy sky and the peculiarities that can be observed in extreme cold. "
