The saber sheath trachea is a manifestation of the windpipe (trachea) in which a healthy windpipe is constricted (literally squeezed) by external pressure. This occurs, for example, in the context of a retrosternal goiter or COPD . The saber sheath trachea becomes clinically relevant when the constriction is so pronounced that it hinders breathing.
