The Sønderjysk Kaffebord (literally South Jutian coffee table ) is particularly common in Sønderjylland / Northern Schleswig , but also in other parts of Denmark .

A classic coffee table, which is served after dinner, consists of coffee and tea as well as several cakes, cakes and pastries. There can be up to 14 different cakes and pies. In addition, donuts ( Æbleskiver ) or lard pastries can be served. A total of at least 21 different cakes, pies and pastries should be offered. The coffee shelf is usually prepared for special occasions such as birthdays or family celebrations.

Siegfried Lenz targeted the proverbial opulence of the Sønderjysk Kaffebord in his humorous description of the environment , "Sorrow with Jutland coffee tables":

“[...] the first big cake, the lagkage , the pride of the housewife [...]: How many layers were cleverly laid on top of each other, the bottom was reminiscent of Jutland's sandy-gray coasts, the filling of its dark peat earth, something stiff, lumpy reminded me of local barrows, and looking at the heavy layers of cream made me think of Jutland winters. The moraine rubble, needless to say, turned out to be a nut splinter on the tongue. A whole geology of culinary delights presented itself to us, and I would have been lost in reverence if it hadn't been for breathlessness. "

The tradition of coffee tables goes back well into the 19th century. The decisive factor, however, was the time that Schleswig belonged to Prussia-Germany, when the Prussian authorities forbade political or beer and snappy meetings: the anti-German mood in large circles should not end in tumult. Instead of pubs, Danes met in specially built meeting houses, and instead of alcohol, coffee was served. This quickly led to a competition as to who organized the most sumptuous “cake orgies”.
