The South African national rugby league team , also known by its nickname Rhinos , represents South Africa on an international level in the sport of rugby league . In 1995 and 2000 the team took part in the Rugby League World Cup.

history

Rugby League was introduced to South Africa by the British in the 1950s, but never came close to the popularity of rugby union there. Up until the 1990s, the Rhinos only competed very irregularly. In the course of the expansion of the Rugby League World Cup , the team first appeared in a World Cup tournament in 1995 , but was not really competitive in any game and was eliminated without a point in the preliminary round. This is the fate that happened to the Rhinos during their second World Cup appearance in 2000 . Since then, the team has not taken part in the finals, and South Africa is now among the bottom of the RLIF World Rankings .
