A safseri ( Arabic سفساري, DMG Safsārī ), sometimes also pronounced Sefseri , Safsari or Sefsari , is a traditional Tunisian veil worn by women.

Appearance

The safseri is made of a large piece of cloth that covers the body. It is mostly off-white and made of cotton , satin, or silk .

Depending on which region of Tunisia it is worn, it can also be very colorful, especially in the south of the country.

distribution

It is worn by women out of modesty in order to avoid glances from men. In today's Tunisia, the garment is mainly worn by older women. Often times the Safseri is carried by a grandmother while her daughter does not. After Tunisia gained independence, President Habib Bourguiba tried unsuccessfully to prevent its use.

Today the Safseri is not very common.
