Samuel T. Busey

Samuel Thompson Busey (born November 16, 1835 in Greencastle , Indiana , †  August 12, 1909 in Urbana , Illinois ) was an American politician . Between 1891 and 1893 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

As a child, Samuel Busey moved with his parents to Urbana, Illinois, where he attended public schools. Then he studied law. In 1859 and 1860 he attended a business school. During the Civil War , Busey served in various units in the Union Army between 1861 and 1865 . He rose to Brevet Brigadier General by 1865 . Between 1867 and 1888 he worked in the banking industry. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . From 1880 to 1889, he was mayor of Urbana in addition to his bank activities.

In the congressional election of 1890 , Busey was elected to the 15th  constituency of Illinois in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Joseph Gurney Cannon on March 4, 1891 . Since he was not confirmed in 1892, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1893 . After serving in the US House of Representatives, Samuel Busey returned to banking. He died on August 12, 1909 in Urbana, where he was also buried.
