The San Francisco Opera is an opera house in San Francisco .

It was founded in 1923 by Gaetano Merola and opened with a performance of La Bohème . It was initially played in the Civic Auditorium in San Francisco. The current venue, the War Memorial Opera House, opened in 1932.

After Merola's death in 1953, Kurt Adler took over the management until his retirement in 1981. Adler brought many stars from Europe to San Francisco and led the San Francisco Opera to an international reputation.

The other general directors were Terence McEwen (1982–1988), Lotfi Mansouri (1988–2001), Pamela Rosenberg (2001–2005) and, since January 2006, David Gockley.
