San José de La Majada UCAFES cooperative (Sociedad Cooperativa de Cafetaleros de San José La Majada de RL) is one of the largest and well-known coffee plantations in the Sonsonate department in El Salvador .

The cooperative is located in the southwest of El Salvador, in the mountains of the Sonsonate region. The cultivation height is between 1400 and 1700 meters above sea level. The cooperative was founded in 1966. The coffees Bourbon and Pacas, a variety of the arabica bean, are produced in a sustainable way in the shade of native trees. Around 600 farmers are involved in the UCAFES cooperative, more than 85% of which are smallholders, in contrast to the agrarian reform cooperatives, which consist of individual farms.

The coffee is harvested by hand, washed, dried and processed in our own mill. The coffee beans, dried in the sun in the traditional way, are temporarily stored after drying in wooden silos until they are transported. The transport then takes place in the usual 60 kilo bags. Around 35% of the cooperative's exports go to the American Starbucks Corporation , which also operates around 150 branches in Germany.

Due to the particularly sustainable and environmentally friendly cultivation method under shade trees , the cooperative was certified by the international environmental protection organization Rain Forest Alliance .
