Building history and art

The origins of the church are said to go back to the 3rd century. The church was first mentioned in writing in 1094. The official name is San Paolo Apostolo . It received the popular name San Paolino ("Sankt Paulchen") to distinguish it from the neighboring hospital church of the same name. On the front there are three marble coats of arms from 1515, which commemorate the visit of the Medici Pope Leo X and the delivery to the cathedral chapter Santa Maria del Fiore.

In the years from 1669 to 1693, a newly structured church interior with a barrel-vaulted central nave was built according to plans by Giovanni Battista Balatri. The barrel vault rests on a two-tier pillar construction, which for the time can be described as "innovative".
