architecture

The Saint James Apostle Church was built in different phases. The atrium was a large room enclosed in stone with a cross on top, with Christian and indigenous symbols on the walls. There are fountains in each of the four corners, and in the middle there is an open space with Solomonic columns . There are two portals in the facade, the stone reliefs of which are also decorated with indigenous symbols. The church and the city are dedicated to the Apostle James. During a drought, a sculpture of Señor de la Capilla (Our Lord of the Chapel) was brought from Apaxco to Tequixquiac. After the drought ended, it was not brought back, presumably because the fibers it was made of had swollen and it was now too difficult to carry. From then on, it has stayed in the city and many miracles have been attributed to it. The parish vault was built in 1856.
