Saurüssel (ceramic utility vessel)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Saurüssel is an earthen pan with a handle and spout. This specially shaped vessel was especially used for roast pigeons and has the shape of a halved short-necked bottle. So that the pigeons could roast crispy, the gravy was poured into a separate vessel several times during the roast. Some models that have come down to us in museums have a flat lid or a lid that is shaped like a sausage trunk.

Today this ceramic form is hardly available in stores. It can be proven back to the 11th century by photo evidence.
