The nest built by some fish species, including labyrinth fish such as Siamese fighting fish , paradise fish , spotted threadfish and various catfish species , is called a foam nest . It consists of air bubbles surrounded by secretion and has the appearance of foam .

The foam nest is mostly built by the males and most species anchored between a dense cover of floating plants . A few species such as B. the emerald fighting fish build their foam nest in caves or small shelters. In this nest the fertilized eggs are collected, which rise due to their fat content. The nests are guarded until the boys swim free.

Foam nests are also created by other animals, e.g. B. Insects (see cuckoo spit ) and amphibians (see Wallace flying frog ).
