Scheduled Monument

A Scheduled Monument is a protected archaeological site in the United Kingdom . In contrast to Listed Buildings , Scheduled Monuments are usually uninhabited.

The legal protection is based on the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979 . The monuments are declared by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport , the ministry also maintains the list in which they are included. There are around 20,000 Scheduled Monuments in the UK.
