In the geosciences, a stratum is a stratification- parallel interface in sedimentary rocks .

The spatial position of a layer surface is determined by the direction of stroke and the angle of incidence. The angle of inclination and the direction of inclination of a layer surface in relation to a horizontal surface are referred to as falling , while the perpendicular to this is referred to as stroking .
