Key box
A key box is a storage place for keys . In public buildings but also in apartment buildings , such a lockable box is often installed in front of or next to doors . Thus, you only need a single security key for this door, which is located in the key box, and each authorized person receives a key to the key box to open the key box.
Another advantage is the following: If one of the authorized persons loses the key, only the lock for the key box and the associated keys for all authorized persons have to be replaced; but not the possibly expensive locking device for the door and all of the security keys. Conversely, if the security lock is defective, only a new security key is required, but not many expensive copies. If access is to be blocked for all authorized persons, this can be done immediately and very easily by simply removing the security key from the box; otherwise you would first have to collect all the keys in circulation, which is (time) consuming.
Some models have a window made of safety glass (picture) , which can be smashed in, for example to get the key for doors that are normally locked in an emergency.
In the technical connection conditions for fire alarm systems according to DIN 14675 , special key boxes may be required by the fire brigade.
In addition to the key box for storing security keys in public buildings, it comes in larger form in private households or in businesses for e.g. B. Car keys are used. Key boxes are used here, on the one hand, for clear storage and easy location of the keys and, on the other hand, for safe keeping of the same (e.g. car keys in a car dealership).
Other names, especially for key boxes for storing several keys, are key depot or key safe . If you do not lock it, i.e. keys are kept in an openly accessible manner, this is called a key rack .
