A snake boat , also called Chundan Vallam , is a particularly long, open paddle boat that is particularly common in the southern Indian state of Kerala .

Boat races with Chundan Vallam are traditionally held on canals in the backwaters . The rhythm is passed on via calls. The helmsman at the stern and the paddlers in the back rows are standing during the journey. The number of paddlers is between 64 and 128 men per boat.
