The castle museum of the city of Aschaffenburg with works of art and historical evidence from six centuries is located in Johannisburg Castle . The castle has been restored since 2016, which will take several years. Because of this, some exhibition rooms are repeatedly closed and others rearranged.

Location

The electoral living rooms on the 2nd floor of Johannisburg Palace, which are furnished with the original furniture of Archbishop Friedrich Karl Joseph von Erthal from around 1800, are currently (2018) not accessible.

Collection focus

After rooms for constantly changing special exhibitions, one enters the old keep. Here are u. a. Works by the sculptor Johannes (Hans) Juncker on display. He created the altar, the pulpit and the portal figures for the palace chapel, and the pulpit for the collegiate church of St. Peter and Alexander .

The cabinet exhibition is located in a room on the 2nd floor of the city wing. Here you can find out how objects got to the castle museum in different ways.

Modern art concludes in the east wing. Sculptures and works of art by contemporary Aschaffenburg artists can be seen there.

The Bayerische Staatsgalerie Aschaffenburg is also located in Schloss Johannisburg as part of the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen. The focus of the old German gallery is on works by Lucas Cranach the Elder. Ä. and his famous school (workshop), which is currently (2018) closed for restoration work. A special feature is the world's largest collection of architectural models made of cork, which depict the most famous buildings of ancient Rome in great detail.
