The snow sign ( snow pole , snow guide post ) is part of the road equipment and serves both road users and the clearance service as an orientation aid for large snow depths. Like the delineator , it is a traffic control device and improves the visibility of the edge of the road and lateral obstacles that are covered by the snow. Snow symbols are mainly used in regions in which snow depths or snow drifts over 50 cm are to be expected during the winter months .

In the past, snow signs were set up at regular intervals along the road or path by the roadside attendant . In the beginning, thick branches or simple wooden sticks were used for this, which were located along the path and were easy to collect. It was only with the advent of motorized traffic that special snow poles were produced and marked with warning colors or equipped with flags for better visibility.

Today the industry supplies various snow signs made of plastic, metal or wood covered with reflective foils. Besides the embodiment as a single system, the snow character can also be combined with guide posts, by the rod is concealed within the delineator and if required from the road maintenance is pulled out. The individual systems of the snow poles (usually 1.5 m, 2.0 m or 2.5 m long) are either fastened with delineator caps, clamping systems for delineators or ground sockets. If the visibility of the pole is to be further improved in the dark, a transverse bar with reflector foil is integrated at the top of the pole .

In Germany, snow poles in orange-black stripes (across) are common.
