Blackhill Inclined Elevator

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Blackhill Inclined Elevator was a boat lift in the Monkland Canal in Scotland .

It was opened along with the relevant section of the canal in 1794. The elevation gain that the elevator overcame was 96 feet, or nearly 30 meters. It was a double-track system with two troughs for wet pumping of boats up to 70 feet (about 21 meters) long and 13 feet (about 4 meters) wide. The system was supported by a steam engine , and later it was switched to dry pumping to save water.

In 1887 the elevator was closed. There are no more remains, but you can see the former location in the landscape.
