Lettering guides are for dimensioning and labeling in technical drawings used. The specified characters, which correspond to the standard font, ensure a clean typeface.

They are made of transparent plastic with letters, numbers and special characters stamped into it. They are colored lightly, mostly orange or green, for better recognition. So that the characters do not run when drawing with the ink ( capillary effect ), the stencils must not lie directly (flat) on the paper. For this they either have small knobs on the back, or an aluminum rail above and below, or the cross-section was chosen so that the rows of letters and numbers do not touch the paper.
