A protective niche (also: tunnel niche ) is a component to protect workers in a tunnel.

Railway employees , for example line walkers or workers who are in a railway tunnel , need a train to drive through the tunnel, a shelter. The same applies if a route runs in a deep and narrow cut in the terrain. The niches are also used to temporarily store tools. In longer tunnels, there are also larger lockable rooms to store equipment.

On single-track lines, protective niches are usually built in on one side, and on curved lines on the outer curved side. In double-track tunnels, niches are usually arranged opposite one another. The niches are installed at a distance of around 20 meters.
