Schwarze Katz describes a large location in the German wine-growing region of the Moselle and is part of the Burg Cochem area .

It is said that in 1863 wine merchants in Zell were unable to choose between three barrels after an extensive wine tasting. When a black cat came into the wine cellar, jumped on one of the barrels and "defended" it with a hiss, the decision was made for this one. The sale of this wine was such a success that they later bought all the wines from the corresponding vineyard location. The location then got its name Black Cat .

In 1936 a fountain was erected in the old town of Zell in honor of the location and the black cat. This fountain also adorns the first note of the Zeller regional currency, the Zeller . Since August 2012, the Zell landmark has also been in the redesigned traffic circle at the entrance to Zell. The new design of the sculpture was created by caricaturist Michael Apitz from the Rheingau. The design was done by the artist Friedrich Freiburg from the Sauerland.

The individual layers of the large "Schwarze Katz" area are:

  • Merl : Sonneck, Adler, Königslay terraces, Stephansberg, Fettgarten, Klosterberg.
  • Zell : Nußberg, Burglay-Felsen, Petersborn-Kabertchen, Pommerell, Kreuzlay, Domherrenberg, Geisberg.
  • Kaimt : Marienburger, Rosenborn, Römerquelle.
