Swiss National Forest Inventory

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Swiss National Forest Inventory (NFI) records the condition and changes in Swiss forests . A systematic random sample inventory is used in Switzerland to collect data on trees , tree populations, test areas and data from the survey of the local forest service. Among other things, results on forest area, tribe numbers, stock, growth, use and biological diversity are published. The inventory was carried out for the first time in 1983-85 (NFI1), followed by three further surveys in 1993-95 (NFI2), 2004-06 (NFI3) and 2009-17 (NFI4). Since 2009, the data has been collected continuously over a period of nine years. The fifth inventory 2018–26 (LFI5) is currently running.

The NFI is carried out by the Federal Research Institute for Forests, Snow and Landscape (WSL) in cooperation with the Forest Department of the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) . The WSL is responsible for planning, data collection, analysis and scientific interpretation, the FOEN for the forest policy interpretation.
