Floating Gardens (Inle Lake)

Agriculture on the lake

The floating gardens on Inle Lake in Myanmar represent a special form of agriculture on the water.

description

The floating gardens on the shallow lake are built from silt and the roots of the lush water hyacinths and anchored in the ground with bamboo poles. This swaying construction cannot be entered by humans, so the fields are cultivated from the boat. Several harvests per year of tomatoes, cucumbers, aubergines and other vegetables are possible.

History

When the Intha ethnic group came to Lake Inle from the south of Burma a few hundred years ago, they were only tolerated by the peoples who had already resided there on condition that they settled on the lake and the reed belt around it. Since no land was assigned to the Intha, they developed "agriculture" on the water.
