Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment

The Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment ( acronym : SCOPE ; German Scientific Committee for Environmental Problems ) was founded in 1969 by the International Science Council (ICSU). The current president is the Norwegian Jon Samseth .

The SCOPE is an interdisciplinary body that deals with global environmental issues. A worldwide network of natural and social scientists and corresponding institutions assess scientific findings on current and potential environmental issues. As early as 1976, SCOPE wrote a report on behalf of the ICSU in which it was warned of a sharp increase in the carbon dioxide content in the atmosphere and the resulting environmental damage.
