Underside of the striped water snake ( Amphiesma stolata )

The anal , also known as the anal scale or shield, is the enlarged horny scale on the underside of the body of most snakes in the cloaca area . It can be in one piece or divided into two sheds. It lies between the ventralia or abdominal scales and the subcaudalia below the tail.

As with all other scales, their shape, size and training are important determinants within the snake system .
