Sailmaker's glove

Sailmaker's glove

The sail maker glove is a tool of the sail maker for sewing sailing , coatings and the like made of heavy Persenningtuch by hand. Sometimes it is also called a sailing glove , but is to be distinguished from sportswear " sailing glove ".

It is made from strong leather straps. You reach in with your thumb on one side and the rest of your hand on the other. A strong steel disc with a diameter of about 30 mm is incorporated on the rear side in the position of the heel of the hand. It is provided with diamond-like depressions. This prevents the triangular sail needle from slipping (risk of injury) when piercing the cloth and at the same time the full pressure of the hand can be exerted on the needle. This is very helpful with the very thick and stiff fabric.

In principle, the sailmaker's glove works like a large thimble , except that the heel of the hand is protected instead of the fingertip and so more force can be used to push the sewing needle forward.
