Side channel blower

Side channel blower

A side channel compressor is a special type of compressor . It is used to compress or extract air or other gases.

Structure and functionality

To the side of a paddle wheel, a channel is attached over almost the entire circumference. The gas can flow from the areas of the paddle wheel separated by the blades to the channel and back again.

A rapidly rotating impeller sucks in air, which is then forced outwards by centrifugal force , which causes compression. The air then flows back inwards via the side channel and is accelerated again between two further blades and compressed outwards. These multiple compressions allow significantly higher differential pressures to be generated compared to a fan .

application areas

Mechanical and plant engineering

In machine and plant construction, side channel blowers can be used wherever air or other gases are to be compressed or extracted. For example, flat workpieces can be held or transported with the aid of suction grippers .

Exhaust air or wastewater can be extracted and then filtered. Material residues or production waste can also be removed (sucked off or blown away) in almost all production areas. The supply of air is also a possible application, e.g. B. in swimming pool construction or in wastewater treatment.

Construction

The side channel compressor can, for. B. can be used in the rehabilitation of water damage. The aim is to remove moisture from a layer in the room (for example an insulation layer ). Dry air is pressed under the layer to be dried or, depending on the method, sucked out of the insulation layer, the air absorbing the moisture. Air can only circulate in the very dense insulation layer through a certain pressure in order to bring about drying. Side channel blowers are also used when suctioning off standing water from the insulation layer or when flushing the insulation layer. On the one hand, the water in the insulation layer is sucked off via a water pre-separator in suction mode and then pumped out in the water pre-separator; on the other hand, fresh water is brought in during a flush and pressed through the contaminated insulation layer with a side channel compressor that works in pressure mode.
