Selmer Reference 54

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Reference 54 is a saxophone series from the " Selmer Company "; the tenor series has been in production since 2001. The Reference series is available as an alto and tenor saxophone with different finishes. The designation 54 stands for 1954, the year of construction of the first Mark VI saxophone from Selmer (Reference 54 based on the Mark VI).

Tenor saxophone

The Reference 54 tenor saxophone was presented as a replica of the legendary Mark VI that shaped jazz history in the 50s and 60s. Mark VI became the epitome of the vintage sound of the old grand masters of jazz. With the Reference 54 Tenor, Selmer is trying to bring a piece of legend back to life, so far with great success. The Reference promises a round and full sound, in contrast to less good similarities to the Mark VI, but a strong sound is guaranteed. The Reference has a clean response; the blowing resistance is increased to meet the demands of jazz and pop saxophonists.

Alto saxophone

The alto saxophone of the Reference 54 series, like the tenor, was built based on the Mark VI. According to Klaus Dapper, the Reference 54 alto saxophone is more similar to the Mark VI production of the 1970s, this is noticeable through the slightly more open tone. As with the tenor, the blowing resistance of the alto is slightly increased. However, this is not a fault of the instrument or the workmanship, but an adaptation to the needs of many jazz and pop saxophonists who, in contrast to the classics, prefer more pressure when playing.
