The coat of arms of Senarica

Senarica is a village in Abruzzo in central Italy . With a population of less than 300, Senarica was an independent republic for around four centuries until the end of the eighteenth century. It was the smallest state that kept its independence for so long, but today it is part of the municipality of Crognaleto in the province of Teramo .

history

Senarica and the neighboring village of Poggio Umbricchio gained independence around 1343 when Queen Joan I of Anjou granted independence to the area because of the residents' fierce resistance to the enemy troops of Milan under Ambrogio Visconti . Impressed by the splendor of the Doge Republic of Venice, the rulers of Senarica took on a similar republican government, with an elected Doge as head of state.

coat of arms

The coat of arms of Senarica was a black umbrella with a silver lion (as a symbol of the state) that catches a silver snake. This coat of arms also appeared on a gold gonfanon and on the seal. In the village cathedral hangs a reproduction of the lion crowned by a crown in this particular painting.
