history

Laurentius Hospital

After the Catholic priest Heinrich Hake campaigned for the construction of the hospital in the then town of Steele in the middle of the 19th century, it was built by the Steeler architect Johannes Schirner .

The hospital began operations in June 1869, with the first patient being a seriously injured worker from the New Scotland ironworks in Lower Horst , which was built in 1856 . The sisters of the order of poor servants of Jesus Christ from Dernbach in the Westerwald worked here from the beginning until 1968. The doctors Dr. Hülsebusch, he worked free of charge in the early years, and Dr. Threshold brook and Dr. Schnütgen initially shaped the house. In addition, doctors from the Berg- und Hütten-Aktien-Verein New Scotland were able to care for their own patients in-house.

From 1877, the overall appearance of today's house with neo-Gothic elements was created in around five construction phases . Under the chapel, which was built in 1904, an operating theater was set up, which was modern for the time. After the entire building complex was given an additional floor in 1911, the hospital was finally completed and inaugurated in 1912.

The expansion of the Laurentius Hospital was significantly supported by the Steeler pastor and honorary citizen of the city of Steele, Matthias Büssem (* March 7, 1834; † January 30, 1914).

chapel

As part of the third construction phase, the chapel, which was also provided with neo-Gothic elements, was inaugurated in 1904 at the western end of the Laurentius Hospital. It is located on the first floor, is around 19 meters long and offers space for around 100 worshipers. Inside, the chapel has tall windows with an organ gallery and a raised chancel. The wall paintings by the carpenter and painter Franz Anton Goldkuhle from the Wiedenbrück school were, like most of the other inventory, donated.

Conversion to a nursing home for the elderly

The clinic was closed in 1981 after protests. The transformation into the St. Laurentius nursing home began , with former hospital employees being taken over into the new facility.

In 1998, with the help of the St. Elisabeth Foundation in Essen, the nursing home for the elderly was turned into a contemporary senior citizens' foundation.

Senior pen today

In 1999 the foundation stone was laid for the new building, which was inaugurated in August 2001, to the south and behind the old building. In addition, maintenance operations in the historic old building were discontinued in March 2000. In this old building, which has been a listed building since August 6, 1989, the administration and conference rooms are now located on the ground floor. There is also a sales point for goods and a hairdresser. There are apartments on the other floors above.

In the new building, senior citizens live in four residential groups on two floors. It offers a total of 78 single and 12 double rooms and is surrounded by green spaces. A connecting corridor leads from the new to the old building in order to reach, among other things, the house chapel, in which services of both denominations take place regularly.
