The Shaftesbury Avenue is a north-south axis in the center of London. It begins in Piccadilly Circus , then leads over Cambridge Circus (intersection with Charing Cross Road ) to New Oxford Street .

The road, which follows the course of a much older country road, was built between 1877 and 1886 across the former slum areas in order to improve transport connections with the West End.

It was named after the 7th Earl of Shaftesbury, who was a benefactor and had campaigned for life improvement in the slums.

Today Shaftesbury Avenue is known as "the" theater street of London. Some scoffers call it "London's Broadway". The street is less lined with architecturally valuable buildings. Only the London Pavilion, the "Lyric" Theater and the "Palace" Theater at Cambridge Circus stand out among the simple buildings.

She is also mentioned in the movie Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 .

Shaftesbury Avenue is mentioned in the title Wild West End by the band Dire Straits , which is about the West End of London.
